How to Prepare Your Property for a Landscaping Project

A well-prepared site helps your landscaping project start smoothly, stay on schedule, and avoid unexpected costs. Here’s what you can do before your landscaper arrives.

Preparation Checklist Clear the site — Remove personal items, outdoor furniture, pot plants, and anything you want to keep from the work area. Mark underground services — Call Dial Before You Dig (1100) to locate gas, water, electrical, and telecommunications lines. This is free and can prevent costly damage. Notify neighbours — Let them know about the project, expected timeline, and any potential impacts (noise, access, shared fencing). Confirm access — Ensure the landscaper can access the site with equipment. Clear side gates, driveways, and access paths. Protect what stays — Trees, garden features, or structures you want to keep should be clearly marked and discussed with your landscaper. Know your budget limits — Decide in advance how you’ll handle unexpected costs or variations. See choosing a landscaper guide or get free quotes.
